Die Videoinstallation to fly, to swim, to be at home war vom 10. März bis 23. April 2017 im Kortumhäuschen des Bochumer Stadtparks zu sehen. Konzipiert wurde die Arbeit im Rahmen der Ausstellungsreihe Kunstvereinehoch3 auf Einladung der drei Bochumer Kunstvereine (Bochumer Kunstverein, Galerie Januar, Kulturrat Bochum).
Sie zeigt in scheinbar einfachen Bildeinstellungen vier verschiedene Situationen, die zunächst nur assoziativ in formalem und inhaltlichem Zusammenhang stehen. Es geht um unseren Umgang mit analogen und digitalen Begrenzungen des Raumes als Lebens-, Bild- und Deutungsraum.
Eines der Videos zeigt einen Menschen, einen Mann im Meer, der offensichtlich versucht, sich über Wasser zu halten. Er hat etwas, an dem er sich festhält. Wir meinen dieses Bild sofort zu verstehen: eine Szene aus dem Mittelmeer, vielfach über Presseagenturen verbreitet. Das Bild hat jedoch einen anderen realen Hintergrund, der uns verschwiegen bleibt, es erzählt uns nur die Geschichte unserer jüngsten medialen Seherfahrungen. Tatsächlich ist es ein Kite-Surfer vor der holländischen Küste, der sein Board verloren hat und auf Rettung wartet. In jedem Fall ist es ein Bild eines Menschen, dessen räumlich-mediale Verortung problematisch ist. Ein Teilaspekt dieses Gedankens findet sich auch in den anderen Videos thematisiert, wenn es um die Eroberung von artfremden Räumen geht, bzw. um die Frage, wo wir zu Hause sind.
Location
The video installation to fly, to swim, to be at home was shown from 10 March to 23 April 2017 in the Kortumhäuschen of the Bochumer Stadtpark. The work was conceived as part of the exhibition series Kunstvereinehoch3 at the invitation of the three Bochumer Kunstvereine (Bochumer Kunstverein, Galerie Januar, Kulturrat Bochum).
In seemingly simple picture settings, it shows four different situations that are initially only associatively connected in terms of form and content. It is about how we deal with analog and digital limitations of space as a space of life, image and interpretation.
One of the videos shows a man, a man in the sea, obviously trying to keep his head above water. He has something to hold on to. We think we understand this picture immediately: a scene from the Mediterranean, often spread by press agencies. The picture, however, has a different real background, which remains hidden to us, it only tells us the story of our recent media visual experiences. In fact, it is a kite surfer off the Dutch coast who has lost his board and is waiting for rescue. In any case, it is an image of a person whose spatial-medial location is problematic. A partial aspect of this thought can also be found in the other videos when it comes to the conquest of alien spaces or the question of where we are at home.
